I am a historian and writer who examines how cultures remember—how songs, photographs, performances, and monuments store and transmit the past. My work focuses on American cultural memory and the ways history is created, circulated, and contested across media.
I have authored university-press books on early jazz and Civil War memory, co-edited two collections on Bob Dylan and cultural politics, and published widely on the intersections of music, race, and public memory. I present my work at academic conferences and public events, and I consult on projects that bring together history, art, and culture.
I am available for speaking engagements, interviews, and collaborative writing projects. Please reach out via carneycp@sfasu.edu or through the contact page.
