My current book, Reckoning with the Devil: Nathan Bedford Forrest in Myth and Memory, looks at Nathan Bedford Forrest, slave trader, Confederate general, and first leader of the Ku Klux Klan, through the lens of cultural history and thus creates a unique narrative centered on memory construction and legacy building. This book, ultimately, examines how race and racism have shaped our understanding of the Civil War from the 1860s to the present day. This book will be published by LSU Press later in 2024.

In 2023, I published a collection of essays (co-edited with Erin C. Callahan) on Bob Dylan and his use of setlists. This book, The Politics and Power of Bob Dylan’s Live Performances, published by Routledge, features thirteen essays (and a series of sonnets) focused on various aspects of Dylan’s live performances. The Table of Contents can be found here. A recent podcast with me and Erin with Craig Danuloff can be found here.

My first book, Cuttin’ Up: How Early Jazz Got America’s Ear, published by the University Press of Kansas, looks at the origin of jazz and its diffusion through phonograph records, radio, and film in the 1920s and 1930s. This book can be found here.
